The birth of Parent Packs

Parent Packs
Parent Packs was started by us – Rebecca and Sophie - two mums who both have two kids each. The idea behind the business evolved from our experiences preparing to become first time mums. We were confused about what we needed to buy in order to be well prepared to care for our newborn baby. There was limited information around on essential quality branded items.  There were baby department stores with everything you could possible think of that you may need, as well as everything you couldn’t possibly think of that you may need.  As well as multiple options for each and every item, where you needed to evaluate quality, functionality, cost and even colour!

When you are expecting your first child, you suddenly enter this new demographic.  This demographic opens you up to a new set of products and services that you would have never needed before (unless of course you had been shopping for a baby gift for someone else).  It can make it a very daunting experience as you prepare for your baby.

At Parent Packs we aim to provide essential items for expectant parents with products necessary for pregnancy, in hospital and for those first few months at home. We have done the research to find the quality branded products, which are reasonably priced.  We offer one quality, well priced product for each item in the our comprehensive Baby Checklist.  The aim is to save you time as we have done the research in selecting the items you need, and reduced the number of decisons that you need to make by selecting the best product for the job. We hope that our work will make your journey through pregnancy and parenthood a smooth transition.

See our comprehensive Baby Checklist for the products you need for labour, birth and for when you bring your baby home.

If you are looking to save even more time, check out our pre-packed Maternity Packs.  Our most popular packs are our Labour Pack, Basic Hospital Pack, Deluxe Hospital Pack and Feeding Essentials Pack.

PP Tip: Instant Ear Thermometers are great for checking baby's temperature!

Instant Ear Thermometers are an easy option when it comes to checking baby's body temperature.

"I found my Instant Ear Thermometer was a lifesaver when my son was sick. As a new mum I found I was constantly wanting to check my son's temperature and the ear thermometer was much easier to use on my wriggling, screaming child than the digital underarm thermometer I had originally purchased ", Sandra

PP Tip: Terry Towelling Cloth Nappy Squares make great burp cloths!

Terry Towelling Cloth Nappy Squares are great for using as burp cloths and nappy change table covers.

"I used coloured nappy squares for the change table and white ones as burp cloths - I felt happier knowing that I didn't wipe baby's face with the same cloth that I wiped her bottom with!", Clare

Preparing a List of Emergency Contact Details

Sometimes things don’t go to plan when you are expecting…
It is commonly stated around pregnancy circles, that only 5% of babies arrive on their due date. So, if you are one of the remaining 95% where you baby doesn’t arrived on its due date, you need to make sure that you are prepared as well as you can for the unexpected. A good start is making sure that you have some emergency contact list on hand, especially when you are heading into your third trimester. You should keep you emergency contact list with you; in your wallet, you car and at home. Below are some ideas for which numbers to consider including:
  1. Names and phone number of your Doctors/Birthing Assistants (including any after hours or emergency phone/pager details) Include your GP, Obstetrician, Doula, etc…
  2. Hospital / Birthing Centre name and address
  3. Names and phone numbers of your partner, labour assistant, family and close friends.
  4. Medicare details
  5. Private health insurance details if you hold a policy
  6. Blood Group Card
  7. Prenatal test results which may be required for birth
  8. Any health conditions that may effect you (e.g. allergies, high blood pressure, other pregnancy ailments)
It is also important in your last trimester to have your labour and hospital bags packed. Parent Packs have created a comprehensive Baby Checklist which outlines the essential items you need for labour and your hospital stay. Check out http://www.parentpacks.com.au/essential-checklist/view-all-products.html

The difference between your Labour Bag and your Hospital Bag

Your Labour Bag (Labor Bag) contains the items you need for when you are in the delivery room/operating theatre. These items include what you are planning on wearing during labour. Note if you end up having an epidural or a caesarean birth, you will probably end up wearing a hospital gown. You may also want to have some snacks (e.g. glucose sugar lollies to sustain your energy in the event of a long labour) and water bottle to keep you. Some women like to have items such as a heat pack, meditation tape, stress ball, relaxation CD, massage oil or a TENS machine to assist in pain relief. And don’t forget your camera and your mobile phone – just in case you want to share your moment with the rest of the world!

It is also handy to separate out an outfit for you newborn baby. It saves you wading through your Hospital Bag for a set of clothes. You typically need a singlet, jumpsuit (that covers both the newborn’s arms and legs), a hat, and a wrap/blanket to swaddle your newborn baby.

Your Hospital Bag (Maternity Bag) contains the items you need for your stay in hospital. Depending on the expected length of your hospital stay, the number of each item you pack may vary. But generally speaking you need any current medication/vitamins you are taking, your Medicare and private health insurance (if covered) details. You should also bring your blood grouping card. Sanitary pads are required after you have given birth (even if you have had a caesarean delivery). Women can bleed for a few weeks after birth. At Parent Packs, we suggest packing 1 pack of maternity pads and 2 packs of regular pads. Maternity pads are more absorbent than regular pads, but they can be bulky and uncomfortable. We recommend Kotex Maternity and Kotex Regular Pads.

If you are intending on breastfeeding, breast pads are great for catching leaks before they hit your clothes! A nipple cream, such as Lucas Papaw Ointment is great for healing cracked and sore nipples. Maternity bras and maternity feeding tops make breastfeeding more comfortable and allow you to feed without revealing too much flesh!

Your hospital bag should also contain your sleepwear, comfortable clothes for wearing during the day at hospital – whether it is simply a dressing gown and slippers over your sleepwear, or tracksuit pants and slip on shoes. And make sure you don’t forget to pack an outfit for leaving hospital in – you may not want to be caught wearing your pyjamas on the main street out the front of the hospital! Toiletries are a must also, and you may want to consider packing your hairdryer if you think you may want to feel a bit more presentable than you may be feeling!

You will also need to pack some newborn baby clothes. Size 0000 is considered newborn size. But small/premature babies generally wear ‘premmie’ or size 00000 clothes. Larger babies can sometimes fit 000. And just to complicate matters, baby clothing from different manufactures can also vary considerable in its sizing’s. However, most people tend to purchase size 0000 for their newborn baby. You will need singlets, jumpsuits, wraps, blankets, hats, socks and a going home outfit. At Parent Packs we just love Marquise singlets - they are extermely soft and are 100% cotton.

Parent Packs have created a comprehensive Baby Checklist which outlines the essential items you need for your Labour Bag (Labor Bag) and your Hospital Bag. Check out our Baby Checklist

Parent Packs also have pre-packed maternity bags. For example our Basic Hospital pack can be put straight into you Hospital Bag and it contains the basic essentials you need for your stay in hospital. Check out Basic Hospital Pack, or Maternity Packs to view all our pre-packed bags.

How to treat yourself in the last few weeks of pregnancy?

Some pregnant women find themselves at a bit of a loose end once they are on maternity leave. There is only so much nesting one can do.

When your due date is approaching, or has passed you by, and there there is no sign of baby popping out yet, you need to find some activities to keep you occupied. As you are about to enter the next phase of your life where you are no longer your main priority, we suggest that you treat yourself to some pampering!! So take some time out and spoil yourself – after all you deserve it!

1. Get your hair cut or coloured.
2. Have a pedicure – why not have your toes in top shape for labour!
3. Go shopping.
4. Go out for a nice dinner with your partner or friend.
5. See a movie – it may be some time before you get to the cinema again!
6. Enjoy a last minute holiday, weekend away or night at a hotel with your partner.
......And last but by no means least
7. Have one last check and make sure your Labour Bag and Hospital Bag are packed and ready to go!

Parent Packs have created a comprehensive Baby Checklist which outlines the essential items you need for your Labour Bag (Labor Bag) and your Hospital Bag. Check out our Baby Checklist
